Everyone is talking about the new musical, La La Land, written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It’s one of the most dazzling and mesmerizing films of this year. The story is about a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress. At first these two seem like they can’t bear to be in the same room together, but slowly they realize that they are both pursuing a dream and they encourage each other to chase after it. The director takes the audience on a self-discovering journey and teaches us that anything is possible as long as you put your heart and mind into it.
This movie is tastefully made with impeccable attention to detail. The soundtrack takes your breath away and the costume design is exquisite. Ryan Gosling (Sebastian) and Emma Stone (Mia) steal the limelight with their incredible performances and it wouldn’t be a surprise if either of them takes home an Oscar. Who knew Gosling could play the piano like that? And how great is Stone’s singing ability? The cinematography and editing is beyond words, especially during the dancing in the sky sequence. The artistic direction is amazing. There is a Broadway feel to it which is evident when the spotlight is set on one person and the rest of the screen is dimmed.
Besides the beauty of this film, there are comedic elements to it as well. Everything is interwoven very nicely and the dancing is on cue. The unique thing about it is it’s divided into sections and each of them is named after a season. The vibrant colours and beautiful script adds the cherry on the top. You will not want to miss a moment of it so get ready to be enchanted. It’s no wonder this film won the Grolsch People’s Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.
Sometimes you have to believe in your dreams and they may even come true!
